A Street Bike Named Desire

10 Aug

On our ride Sunday, my friend Deanna told me about a new bike shop in Palo Alto specializing in city bikes and all the accessories that a fashionable cyclist requires. So we changed our route so that we could stop by. A quick glance in the window showed that A Street Bike Named Desire was no ordinary bike shop. When do you ever see a “The O List” sign in a bike shop window? I can’t imagine Oprah recommending Mavic wheels or a Fox fork, or even an Assos jersey.

Their Dutch bikes by Linus come in a rainbow of colors, starting at just over $400.

The Pashley Roadster Sovereign with classic Brooks accessories is pricier, but still a fraction of the price of a Campagnolo Super Record 11 groupset.

Got kids to haul? They’ve even got full-on cargo bikes, like this one from Christiania Bikes.

Plus a very wide selection of helmets from Nutcase and Yakkay. The Yakkay ones have removable covers so you can swap a ball cap style for a brimmed hat.

I’m really excited about A Street Bike Named Desire. It’s a breath of fresh air that complements the existing sport-oriented bike shops in our area. I’ll have to stop in again soon. Summer is almost over and I may need a new helmet for my fall wardrobe.

Are you in the market for anything new to spruce up your bicycling style?
