Sometimes this girl goes wild at the department store and throws down the plastic on a few more outfits than she planned. Fortunately, a sturdy rear rack and a bungee cord can carry off an overstuffed garment bag.

Bike Commute Diaries: The Well-Heeled Cyclist

Heels? Yes. Platform shoes? Not so much. Comfortable and efficient pedaling is all about having a solid connection between the ball of the foot and the pedal. Pedaling in platform shoes is like typing in ski gloves.

Bike Commute Diaries: It Never Rains in California

It does rain, but not as much as the weatherman would have you believe. If it’s not raining in the morning I will ride, regardless of the afternoon forecast. I don’t care if it rains on the way home, where I have dry clothes and a warm shower. After two rainy seasons, I’ve only gotten wet a handful of times. This is California, after all.

Bike Commute Diaries: Out to Lunch

When I commute on my city bike with flat pedals instead of my road bike, I can hop on my bike in the middle of the day and ride to lunch or do quick errands. With the right rack, buying an big salad to go is no problem.

Bike Commute Diaries: On Time Arrivals

When I stopped driving every day and started biking more, I started being on time. I can’t fully explain it, but I must underestimate how long it truly takes to drive and how efficient a bike, even an upright city bike, can be.
